IPL Photofacial (Lumecca by InMode): What to Know Before Your First Session

Lumecca IPL device for non-invasive photofacial treatment at New Viva MD Chandler AZ
Lumecca by InMode treats sun damage, redness, and pigmentation in as few as 1 to 2 sessions.

Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, therapy is a popular, non-invasive skin treatment used to address sun damage, redness, and pigmentation. Rather than a single laser wavelength, IPL uses broad-spectrum light that heats the deeper layers of skin, breaking down excess pigment and stimulating new collagen, all without harming the surface of the skin.

At New Viva MD, our physician-led team offers Lumecca by InMode, one of the most powerful IPL platforms available, as part of our medical aesthetics services in Chandler, AZ. Below, we have answered the questions patients ask us most.

What Skin Conditions Does IPL Treat?

Sun damage and age spots: fades brown spots, freckles, and other signs of photoaged skin.

Vascular issues: reduces broken capillaries, spider veins, and diffuse redness.

Rosacea: calms persistent facial flushing and redness.

Acne and acne scars: helps target breakout-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Lumecca is a breakthrough IPL platform that delivers significantly more energy in the wavelength range most effective for vascular and pigmented concerns, which means it can treat a wide range of body areas. Common treatment zones include the face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands, and arms.

Conditions and areas commonly addressed include brown and red discoloration, vascular lesions and spider veins, truncal and leg telangiectasias or visible thread veins, rosacea-related redness, angiomas, benign pigmented and epidermal lesions, hyperpigmentation and dyschromia, and ephelides, more commonly known as freckles.

Benefits of Lumecca IPL

Two concerns, one technology: treats both pigmentation and vascular lesions in the same session.

High efficiency: strong peak power and optimized output mean fewer passes to get results.

Fewer visits: many patients see complete photorejuvenation in just 1 to 2 treatments, compared with the 4 to 6 sessions often needed with standard IPL devices.

Faster sessions: a large spot size and high pulse repetition rate cut down overall treatment time.

More comfortable: a built-in sapphire cooling tip helps keep the treatment comfortable throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions do I need? Most patients need 3 to 6 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, for optimal results. After that, maintenance treatments, 1 to 3 per year, help preserve a healthy, even glow.

What is the recovery time? IPL has almost zero downtime, which is why it is often called a lunchtime procedure. Treated brown spots typically darken and flake off naturally within 7 to 14 days, and any mild redness or swelling usually fades within 1 to 5 days.

Who is a good candidate? IPL works best for light-to-medium skin tones, Fitzpatrick types I through III. Because the treatment targets pigment, people with very dark skin tones or an active tan face a higher risk of burns or hyperpigmentation, so a consultation to review your skin type is an important first step.

How should I prepare? Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 to 6 weeks before your session, and stop using retinoids, Retin-A, and harsh exfoliants at least one week prior.
